Training and experience in teaching can strengthen graduates’ applications for academic positions. The Health Psychology Program at UNC Charlotte offers doctoral students a unique opportunity to develop as teachers through the Mentored Teaching Program. Dr. Lawrence Calhoun, recipient of the Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence and of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching, currently leads the program.
Students first take the Teaching of Psychology course where they learn the fundamental concepts of excellent teaching; there they have the opportunity to observe fellow students teaching their own courses, and to prepare guest lectures and receive feedback from peers and faculty. When they teach their own course, students enroll in the Advanced Practicum in Teaching and receive additional individual and group supervision and continued support from faculty and colleagues as they navigate their first solo teaching experiences.
